Spinning The Wheel: It was mid July when William Joy died. His family were almost beside themselves in mourning. Nobody really knew what had happened but in general all eyes were trained on Steve.
Steve was Bill’s pet penguin, and had never really formed a particularly strong bond with his owner, feeder and carer. Everybody else in the family saw through his rubbery skin to the cold heart that lay beneath, but Bill continued to feed and nurture him until there was a fully grown emperor penguin waddling around the house. Some had doubts about Steve’s practicality. Many had doubts about his legality. Nobody cared for him or was ever pleased to see him except Bill.

There were always suspicions surrounding Bill’s death. Well, not always. For example, while he was still alive, there weren’t many suspicions about it at all. After he was found in the apartment lying face down in a pool of his own blood after being struck in the back of the head with what the police claimed must have been a blunt object, there were suspicions.
The majority of Bill’s family looked at Steve and his powerful fins, which Bill’s nine-year-old niece had encountered last Christmas when Steve had broken her arm with a particularly nasty blow after she tried to feed him a piece of smoked salmon. The means were there, and the motive certainly was clear: Steve had been relatively hostile to Bill all his life. The only problem was how vehemently Steve denied it. “I never touched him!” he would say before waddling off to the kitchen to get a tin of tuna from the fridge.

Five months later, Steve was convicted to nine months hard labour in the penguin compound of London Zoo as the murderer of Bill Joy. He had brief fame as an Internet cult figure, the ‘evil penguin’, in which he was depicted tripping up and slapping several penguins through thin ice and into freezing lakes; the footage that eventually led to a lengthened sentence of three years.
After the first two, Steve was dead. He fell into a particularly deep pool after he had choked on a particularly large sardine that had gone down the wrong way. He never returned to the surface.

In September of that year, Nick Broomfield in association with the BBC made a documentary entitled “Steve: the killer penguin” which was never aired after complications in copyright involving the ‘evil penguin’ footage included in the film.
Later, a live autopsy was carried out of an obscure cable channel late at night which produced extensive evidence that Steve had been a heavy drinker and a heavy smoker. This was how he was always remembered.

There was no funeral.
